Rodents

Rodents

Brown Rat

High risk
20–28 cm

The UK's most common rat. Burrows under sheds, decking and lawns; gnaws cables, contaminates food, carries Weil's disease.

Signs: Greasy runs along walls, droppings 12–18 mm, scratching at night.

House Mouse

Medium risk
7–10 cm

Tiny, agile and breeds fast — a single pair can produce 30+ young a year. Loves loft insulation, kitchen voids and wall cavities.

Signs: Pellet droppings 3–6 mm, smear marks, chewed cardboard.
Insects

Insects

Common Wasp

Medium risk
Worker 12–17 mm

Builds papery nests in lofts, sheds, eaves and wall cavities. Aggressive late summer when the queen stops laying.

Signs: Constant traffic of wasps through one entry point; chewed wood marks.

Hornet

High risk
25–35 mm

Much larger and louder than wasps, but generally less aggressive unless the nest is disturbed. Treatment is the same.

Signs: Slow, audible buzz; large nest in roof voids or hollow trees.

German Cockroach

High risk
12–15 mm

The UK's most reported commercial cockroach — kitchens, hotels, hospitals. Spreads salmonella, E. coli and asthma triggers.

Signs: Light brown adults near pipework and warm appliances; oily smell.

Bedbug

High risk
4–5 mm

Hides in mattress seams, bed frames, behind skirting. Doesn't spread disease but bites in clusters and causes serious distress.

Signs: Small blood spots on sheets, sweet musty smell, bite clusters in lines.

Cat Flea

Medium risk
1–3 mm

Affects 95% of UK flea cases regardless of whether you own a pet. Survives in carpets and under skirting boards for months.

Signs: Itchy ankle bites, jumping insects in light areas.

Cluster Fly

Low risk
6–10 mm

Larger and slower than house flies. Hibernates in loft spaces by the hundred from October to spring.

Signs: Dozens of sluggish flies in upper rooms on warm days.

Garden Ant

Low risk
4–5 mm

Black ants travelling in trails from outside to food. Annoyance pest rather than a health risk.

Signs: Visible trails, small piles of fine soil on paving.

Pharaoh Ant

High risk
2 mm

Yellow-brown commercial pest — hospitals and large heated buildings. Spreads bacteria across food and dressings.

Signs: Multiple nests, super-fast spread when colonies split (budding).

Carpet Beetle

Low risk
2–4 mm

The larvae ("woolly bears") eat wool, fur and natural fibres. Damage often blamed on moths.

Signs: Bare patches in rugs/carpet, larval shed skins along skirting.

Clothes Moth

Low risk
6–8 mm

The brown adult moth doesn't feed — its larvae do, eating holes through wool, silk and stored clothing.

Signs: Silky webbing in wardrobes; holes in jumpers and rugs.

Silverfish

Low risk
12–25 mm

Humidity-loving insect in bathrooms and kitchens. Damages books, wallpaper and stored paper.

Signs: Silvery wriggling insects in basins or bathtub at night.
Birds

Birds

Feral Pigeon

Medium risk
30–35 cm

Town and city pigeons nesting on ledges, parapets and solar panels. Droppings damage masonry and carry Psittacosis.

Signs: Streaking down walls, nests in roof voids and behind signage.

Herring Gull

High risk
55–65 cm

Aggressive in nesting season, especially in coastal Cumbria. Protected — control must be humane and licensed.

Signs: Nests on flat roofs, dive-bombing during summer.

House Sparrow

Low risk
14–16 cm

Small but persistent — colonises eaves and gutters. Protected, but proofing is straightforward.

Signs: Chirping inside roof voids, small twiggy nests.
Wildlifes

Wildlife & other mammals

Grey Squirrel

Medium risk
40–55 cm

Lofts in autumn and spring. Chews insulation, electrical cable and joists. Listed as an invasive species in the UK.

Signs: Heavy daytime scratching in roof, chewed wires, drey nest.

Mole

Low risk
14 cm

Tunnels under lawns, paddocks and golf courses. Treatment via traps; rodenticide is not permitted for moles.

Signs: Fresh molehills appearing along a line; soft, raised tunnels.
